The cruel Covid has taken away another precious life. This time that of a top scientist who was at the helm of national crop forecasting mission. Dr Shibendu Shankar Ray was director of Mahalanobis National Crop Forecast Centre (MNCFC), New Delhi. Dr Ray passed away on May 04 evening at a hospital in Delhi. He would have turned 58 after two months.
The Odia community in Gujarat has grieved the untimely demise of Dr Ray, whose passing is also a national loss. A scientist who worked with him at SAC said Dr Ray was inspiration for her and "it was a great professional and personal loss for me".
Dr Ray had been appointed the director of MNCFC in March 2012, a month before the centre - under the ministry of agriculture, GoI - was formally inaugurated. He was leading a team of scientists and researchers for operational national-level agricultural programmes on crop forecasting, drought assessment, horticulture inventory and development, crop insurance, etc. His key skills were applications of remote sensing and GIS in agriculture.
