AN ERA IS OVER, LATA MANGESHKAR PASSES AWAY AT 92
Albida to the Legendary singer and Nightingale of India Lata Mangeshkar who passed away at the age of 92 at Mumbai on February 6 (Sunday) after suffering a multi-organ failure late last night.
Lata Mangeshkar was admitted to the Breach Candi Hospital after she was diagnosed with pneumonia and also tested COVID-19 positive earlier in January. She was on the ventilator for weeks but on January 28, she was taken off the ventilator after she showed signs of improvement.
It may be recalled that Lata Mangeshkar, 92, was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on January 8 after she tested positive for COVID-19 and pneumonia.
The government has declared two-day national mourning in memory of Lata Mangeshkar. The National flag to fly at half-mast for two days, as a mark of respect. A state funeral will be accorded to the recipient of the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna.
She is a recipient of India’s highest civilian honour Bharat Ratna and has been conferred with Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Award, besides several National and Filmfare Awards.
Lata Mangeshkar’s sister, singer Asha Bhosle, paid a visit to Lata Mangeshkar at the Breach Candy hospital on Saturday evening.
The 92-year-old legendary singer was admitted to the hospital for almost 28 days after testing positive for COVID-19. Though she had recovered from pneumonia and COVID, her condition deteriorated on Saturday and she was shifted on a ventilator.
President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have mourned the passing away of the singing legend.
“I am anguished beyond words. The kind and caring Lata Didi has left us. She leaves a void in our nation that cannot be filled. The coming generations will remember her as a stalwart of Indian culture, whose melodious voice had an unparalleled ability to mesmerise people,” PM Modi tweeted.
Grieving her death, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik tweeted: “Deeply saddened to know about the passing away of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar. The ‘Melody Queen of India’ leaves a void in our collective consciousness. She will live through her melody for eternity. My thoughts & prayers are with the bereaved family & her countless fans.”
