Renowned Urdu scholar, linguist, theorist, literary critic, and former Chairperson of Sahitya Akademi Professor, Gopi Chand Narang has passed away at 91. He was a Professor Emeritus at the University of Delhi and Jamia Millia Islamia. He has been honoured with the Padma Bhushan (2004) and Sahitya Akademi Awards (1995). He incorporated a range of modern theoretical frameworks, including stylistics, structuralism, post-structuralism, and Sanskrit poetics.

Veteran photojournalist, R. Raveendran passed away at the age of 69. He was the recipient of numerous photography awards and is known for his iconic photo of Rajiv Goswami setting himself on fire during the Mandal agitation in the Capital. He has worked in AFP and ANI. He started his career as a teleprinter operator in AFP 1973 and then became a photographer. He was presently working with ANI as Photo Editor.

Leonid Makarovych Kravchuk (Ukrainian: Леонід Макарович Кравчук; 10 January 1934 – 10 May 2022) was a Ukrainian politician and the first President of Ukraine, who served from 5 December 1991 until 19 July 1994. In 1992 he signed the Lisbon Protocol, undertaking to give up Ukraine's nuclear arsenal. He was also the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada and a People's Deputy of Ukraine serving in the Social Democratic Party of Ukraine (united) faction. After a political crisis involving the president and the prime minister, Kravchuk resigned from the presidency, but ran for a second term as president in 1994. He was defeated by his former prime minister, Leonid Kuchma, who then served as president for two terms. After his presidency, Kravchuk remained active in Ukrainian politics, serving as a People's Deputy of Ukraine in the Verkhovna Rada and the leader of the parliamentary group of Social Democratic Party of Ukraine (united) from 2002 to 2006. Kravchuk's presidency is considered to be one of the best in Ukrainian history by social poll rankings.On 10 May 2022, a family member told the Ukrainian News Agency that Kravchuk had died at the age of 88, after a long illness. His death was also confirmed by unnamed officials in Kyiv, as well as Andriy Yermak, head of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's office.

He was also a graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune.

Born in a poor family, he had to discontinue education during his graduation. He became an assistant teacher in a government school. He later obtained a graduate degree as well as a degree in education (B. Ed. - Bachelor of education). He went on to become the head master in a government school. He entered active politics in 1983 and contested elections to the legislative assembly of Meghalaya on the Congress party ticket from the Jirang constituency successfully. He was made the deputy speaker of the legislative assembly in the same year. He was re-elected as MLA of Jirang three times consecutively in 1993, 1998 and 2003. In 1993, he was elected the speaker of the Meghalaya Assembly. Since 1998, he has held charge of several ministries in the government. He was regarded as a loyalist of the 2003-2006 chief minister D. D. Lapang. After dissidence over Lapang's leadership in 2006, he replaced Lapang as the Chief Minister of Meghalaya on 15 June 2006. He served as chief minister until March 2007, when Lapang returned to office following a decision by the Congress Party. He was married to Peggymon Pathaw and had five children, three daughters and two sons.J.D. Rymbai resigned from the Assembly and Indian National Congress on 4 January 2008. Rymbai died on 21 April 2022, aged 88.

Yuri Lvovich Averbakh was a Russian chess grandmaster and author. He was chairman of the USSR Chess Federation from 1973 to 1978. He was the first centenarian FIDE Grandmaster. Despite his eyesight and hearing having worsened, by his 100th birthday he continued to devote time to chess-related activities. His first major success was the first place in the Moscow Championship of 1949, ahead of players including Andor Lilienthal, Yakov Estrin and Vladimir Simagin. He became an international grandmaster in 1952. In 1954 he won the USSR Championship ahead of players including Mark Taimanov, Viktor Korchnoi, Tigran Petrosian, Efim Geller and Salo Flohr. In the 1956 Championship, he came equal first with Taimanov and Boris Spassky in the main event, finishing second after the playoff. Later Averbakh's daughter, Jane, would marry Taimanov. Averbakh's other major tournament victories included Vienna 1961 and Moscow 1962. He qualified for the 1953 Candidates' Tournament (the last stage to determine the challenger to the World Chess Champion), finishing joint tenth of the fifteen participants. He also qualified for the 1958 Interzonal tournament at Portorož, by finishing in fourth place at the 1958 USSR Championship at Riga. At Portorož, he wound up in a tie for seventh through eleventh places, half a point short of advancing to the Candidates' Tournament. He played in the 1993 Maccabiah Games in Israel, coming in fourth.

Rama Kant Shukla was born on 25 December 1940, at Khurja city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. His initial studies were in the traditional way as he learnt Sanskrit from his parents- Sahityacharya PANDIT Brahmanand Shukla and Smt. Priyamvada SHUKLA, and attainedSahitya Acharya and Sankhya Yoga Acharya degrees. Later, he joined Agra University and did MA in Hindi with a gold medal and subsequently did MA in Sanskrit from the Sampurnananda Sanskrit University. He also secured a Ph.D in the year 1967. The topic of his Ph.D was 'Jainacharya Ravishena- krita Padmapurana (Sanskrit) evam Tulasidas krita Ramacharitmanas ka tulanatmak adhayayan. Shukla started his career by joining the Multanimal Modi PG College in Modi Nagar in 1962 as a Hindi lecturer. After obtaining his PhD, he joined Rajdhani College Delhi University, New Delhi as a Hindi faculty member on 1 August 1967. In 1986, he was appointed as the Reader of the Hindi Department and worked there till his retirement, in 2005. He has participated in many seminars and conferences including the World Sanskrit Conference. He has held the chair of All India Oriental Conferences on Indian aesthetics and poetry and Sanskrit literature and is the founder Chief Editor of the Arvacheena-Sanskritam, a quarterly journal published by Devavani Parishad, Delhi, an organization he has founded. He has also participated in the All India Radio Sarvabhasha Kavi Sammelan representing Sanskrit language.

Elvera Britto was an Indian hockey player who captained the Indian women's hockey team and the Mysore state's team. She captained the Mysore state team for eight consecutive national titles between 1960 and 1967. She received the Arjuna Award, India's second highest sporting honor, in 1965. Britto also served as a president of the Karnataka State Women's Hockey Association and a selector for the national women's team. Britto started playing hockey when she was 13 and went on to become captain of the Mysore State women's hockey team. As captain between 1960 and 1967, she led the team to win national titles for eight consecutive years. Along with her sisters, Rita and Mae, the Britto sisters were considered a 'formidable trio' in the Indian national and Mysore state teams. She represented India in games against Australia, Japan, and Sri Lanka. She became the second women's hockey player to receive India's Arjuna Award when she won it in 1965. Earlier, Anne Lumsden had won the award in its inaugural year in 1961. After Britto's retirement from playing in the 1970s, she remained associated with the game as an administrator, serving as the president of the Karnataka State Women's Hockey Association for two terms over eight years. Britto's mother Latetia was one of the founding members of the association. Britto also served as a selector and the manager of the national hockey team, for over twelve years. Referring to the hardships of playing in the 1960s as an Indian women's hockey player, Britto's sister Rae would recollect that the Brittos would travel by third-class trains, cook their own food, and even stitch their own uniforms before a tournament. As an administrator, her focus was said to have been the revival of hockey interest in inter-school competitions arriving at the grounds before even the players, turning up in her moped.Britto died on 26 April 2022 in Bangalore from a heart attack. She was aged 81.She remained unmarried during her lifetime.
