'The day I die, do cry; but even on that day don't stop the langar. Instead use 25 kilos atta more to make more rotis'.
Today Langar Baba, the name by which a self-made Jagdish Lal Ahuja was popularly known, passed away at the age of 85. His services to the people were recognised by the Modi government by awarding him the Padma Shri. Langar Baba had run a langar using his own money, since January 2000. On a typical day he would feed about 2500 people. He had sold a chunk of his property to fund this free kitchen.
Jagdish Lal was 12 years old at the time of Partition. He had to flee with his family from Pakistan since they were all Hindus and unwilling to convert. He set up a successful business for himself. Had a few showrooms in the markets. Had purchased some land. This property was used to fund his free kitchen.
