Mother Irani passed away peacefully in her sleep early this morning. Jer was 94. She played the role of both mother and father to me,since she was 32. What a spirit she was. Filled with funny stories that only she could tell. The longest arm that always dug deep into her pockets, even when there wasn’t much there. When she sent me to the movies, she made sure all the compound kids came with me. ‘Don’t forget the popcorn’ she would say. She loved her food and her songs and she could fact-check Wikipedia and IMDb in a flash. Sharp, sharp, sharp, till the very end. She always said ‘“You are not an actor for people to praise you. You are an actor only so you can make people smile.” “Make people happy” She said. Last night she asked for Malai Kulfi and some mango. She could have asked for the moon and the stars if she wished. She was, and always will be.......A Star.

Sh Shakti Sinha, former Secretary in GoI and former Director of NMML, passed away while in sleep last night. Sinha was an erudite scholar of such varied subjects like Afghanistan and Buddhists. A humble and affable human being, ever smiling and friendly. Shakti returned from Russia last week and was having some health issues but not really serious to take his life. He was with his family till late in the night yesterday. Shakti Sinha was also a Distinguished Fellow and member of governing council of the India Foundation. He was to attend the geopolitics conference taking place at Leh but requested for a virtual address due to health issues. His session was scheduled for this afternoon. Last night he left a message with all the eminent participants in the conference “Miss you all”. Sadly, it so turned out that we all miss him forever. It is a great loss to the intellectual world of which he was an eminent and integral part. Condolences with profound sorrow for the family members and wellwishers of the departed soul. May the Almighty accord a place for him in his abode. Aum Shanthi….

Professor Aniruddha Ray passed away last night. He was 82. With him have gone so many humorous anecdotes touching on people and places he encountered; they ranged from Kolkata to Beirut to Paris as well as obscure hamlets of rural Bengal. A senior historian of late medieval and early colonial Bengal and India, one of his mammoth works was ‘The French in India’ in two volumes. His research, inspired by Annales and Aligarh, centred on cities and people in their material settings. They will continue to interest those with a serious commitment to archival research and without reverence for the empires of capital. He had little time for elitism, pomposity, arrogance, avarice and pettiness-the viper-like qualities which have stifled the late bourgeois academia. He never equated trendy obfuscations with either the rigour of intelligence or sophisticated scholarship. In short, it was impossible to fool him with shoddy or superficial research. Once, having observed the fashion to write ‘biographies’ of inanimate objects, he had declared: Surely, there are sufficient numbers of dead men and women to write about? This is how many of us will remember him: the smoke swirling upward from his cherry wood pipe, the lamp casting a glow in the evening and the old chair where he sat in his dust-laden study overflowing with books and papers and a broken Philips radio consigned to a corner…. He belonged to the generation of humane professors who took teaching very seriously alongside research. He leaves behind many students and others who admired him for his many contributions to institution building, including the Rowing Club of Calcutta University.

OMG... Prof A. R. Venkitaraman, Former Professor, PG Chemistry Department and Dean, The American College, Madurai passed away. He is known for his work on Autonomous Colleges in India and one of the Pillars of Autonomous System of The American College (Jointly with Dr. R.P.Reisz). I learned a lot from Prof. A.R.V, Dr. J.C.B. Abraham, Former Vice Principal and Prof. B. Gunaraj, Former Principal through the meetings and Academic Activism of Madurai Multidisciplinary Mandram (MMM), The American College. I never forget the valuable experiences learned from the interactions among these Academic Giants on A to Z matters. We are enjoying the Fruits of Autonomous Status of The American College, all because of the pain and stress experienced by Prof. A.R.V and other Professors during 1978. Herewith I shared his work on 'Professors of Autonomous Colleges and Non - Autonomous Colleges: Implementation of College Autonomy'. Source - New Frontiers in Education, Vol. X, No.1, Jan-March, 1980. My Deepest Condolences ... Rest in Peace
